Grid Reference: TQ935493

charing sand_pit-2This site, a general view of which is shown on the left, has been worked for bulding sand since around 1950. It has excellent exposures of sections through the Folkestone Sands Formation, and is one of the best sites for study of the Folkestone Sands in Kent and probably in the UK.

Sand extraction reveals a continually changing spectrum of sedimentological data and three dimensional exposures.

As indicated in the picture on the right, the sands display a variety of cross-sets with bimodal palaeoflow, numerous reactivation surfaces, tidal bundles and mud drapes that indicate tidal palaeoflow. The predominant current is south west with subordinate north east current.
