Grid Reference: TQ702549

Oaken Wood is a key geomorphological site, providing the best example in Britain of ridge and trough topography produced by intense cambering and gulling during the Pleistocene. The features are formed by tilting and cracking of surface rock outcrops by periglacial processes or by deformation of weaker, underlying strata.

The ridge crests rise up to eight metres above the trough floors, which extend for about 0.5 kilometres in an east-west direction.

This unusual type of topography is confined to the Maidstone area in Kent and to the north Cotswolds. It is most spectcularly developed at Oaken Wood.
